High Alert!

Quote from 我报 My Paper:

Even if you're just "surfing"the Internet and not downloading any files, your computer is NOT safe. Online attacks have taken on many forms, as new hackers are driven by profits.

Older generations of hackers were usually young people challening the authorities, "cracking" new technologies, or seeking fame. New hackers, however, are out to steal private information and make money.

Network security company Symantec said they found 212,101 new malicious codes in the first six months of this year. This is a 318% increase compared to the same period last year.

Network security experts said that "drive-by download"is the new trend in online attacks. A user's computer is attacked as soon as he goes to an infected site; the computer is infected even if the user does not perform any other actions like downloading files or running rogue programs. Even well-known or respectable websites are not immune to such attacks.

The experts said that Web 2.0 applications like blogs, social networking sites, and wikis, which allow users to upload content, are increasingly targeted by hackers.

Here are some little tips they provided:-
1) Install anti-virus software and activate firewall.
2) Update your anti-virus regularly.
3) Install patches for windows and other softwares often.
4) DO NOT surf suspicious websites, click on unknown links or download files. Even if the email was sent out by family or friends, please check the file thoroughly or verify with your family and friends. Their computers may have been infected and auto send out files or emails containing virus.
5) Change your password regularly. Use a combination of caps & small letters and numbers.
6) Type the URL directly in your browser and not click on the link itself.

P/S: Maybe some kind souls can provide URL for us to download free anti-virus softwares?
