After graduated from Parker Tertiary, Angie and Jim went on to open Hartford’s Pub on 3rd March 1975. In 1976, they got married on Angie’s birthday, 5th September. Their first child, James was born on Christmas Day in 1977.
Renee went on to Procter Uni and took up Master of Philosophy in Law. As for Frederick, he took up Masters of Music in Performance also in Procter Uni.
13th April 1977 - It was the first time, the students from Procter Uni performing arts stream held their performance outside school premises. They were doing last minute preparation for the big show tomorrow at the main stage in Stuart Mall.
Suddenly, loud screams are heard.
“Aaaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!” Chaos broke out as the spotlight on the stage came falling down
“Thump!” It landed right on top of Frederick.
“Call the ambulance!” someone shouted.
Upon receiving the news, Fernando, Renee, Jim and Angie rushed to Carson Hospital.
“Doctor, how is he?” Fernando asked worryingly as the doctor came out of the operating room.
“I am sorry. He was already losing excessive blood when he was rushed here. The fallen spotlight hit him on critical areas, his skull was dented and his spine was broken. We tried our best but there was nothing much that we could do to save him.”
“Renee!” Angie shouted.
Upon hearing what the doctor said, Renee fainted.
“Angie! Where’s Frederick?” Renee asked the minute she woke up.
“Jim is preparing his funeral with Fernando now.” Angie hugged Renee in her arms.
“I must be dreaming, Angie. Frederick can’t be dead. Tell me this is not true!” Renee sobbed.
“Renee, you must take care of yourself.” Angie said as she held Renee down by her hands. “There’s something I should let you know. The doctor examined you when you fainted. I don’t know if it’s good or bad news to you.”
Renee looked into Angie’s eyes. “Is there anything wrong with me?”
“Don’t worry, girl. Nothing is wrong. It’s just that…”Angie paused.
“Angie, what is it?” Renee gave a worried look.
“You are pregnant, my friend.” Angie let out with a sigh.
After the funeral, the three friends were helping to pack the stuff in Frederick’s room.
“What do you intend to do with the child, Renee?” asked Angie.
“I’ve decided to keep it.” Renee replied with strong determination.
“How are you going to raise the child? You still have a bright future. Frederick would not want you to sacrifice for his child.” Jim said.
“Jim, this is our child and my only memory of Frederick. I would try my best to raise the child. It is my responsibility to do so and moreover, it is an innocent life we are talking about here.” Renee argued.
“We would raise this child together.” Fernando interrupted as he came into Frederick’s room.
“Fernando, Frederick is my best friend. However, I feel that this is being unfair to Renee. She is still young. How is she going to continue studying or find another man to marry if she bears this child?” Jim expressed his concerns.
“Jim, I can understand your concerns. However like what Renee said, this is their child, my beloved brother’s child and Renee’s only memory of Freddie.” Fernando replied and then turns to look at Renee. “Renee, I know this is not the best time when Freddie has just left us. However, I still need to ask you. Would you be willing to marry me and let me take care of you and your child on behalf of Freddie?”
“Huh?” Angie and Jim stared wide-eyed at each other.
“Fernando, I appreciate your kindness but you know how much I had love Frederick.” Renee replied as she held Frederick’s photo to her chest.
“Of course I know that, Renee. However, you have to continue your studies and definitely needs someone to raise the child together with you. The child needs a dad too. This is also the least I can do for Freddie.” In Fernando’s eyes, the three friends can sense his sincerity and assurance with the same warm feeling he always gave them.
After the demise of Frederick, Fernando took great care of Renee. He had never been in love. However, being a gentleman to start with, he knew just the way to treat a girl right. Rain or shine, Fernando would always be there at the gates of Procter Uni waiting patiently for Renee to finish school. Knowing that Renee has not gotten over Frederick, Fernando had never address Renee as his girlfriend. Neither did he forced\ her for an answer. Despite his busy schedule at work, Fernando never missed an appointment that Renee had with the doctor. He accompanied her on every trip.
On 15th Jan 1978, Renee gave birth to a baby boy, Ted. Though Fernando’s name was on Ted’s birth certificate as the child’s father, he and Renee had yet to hold their wedding.
14th Feb 1978, Valentine’s Day – Renee was waiting for Fernando to come home as he has arranged to bring Renee out for dinner. As Renee was feeding Ted, her cell phone ringed.
“Hello! Is that Miss Renee?” came the voice from the other end.
